Wendy the Good Little Witch from Milton Bradley (1966)

Company: Milton Bradley | Release date: 1966 | Ages: 5-10 | # of players: 2-4 | Where to purchase: eBay

In Wendy the Good Little Witch, players take on the roles of Wendy and friends as they make their way home from Wendy’s birthday party.

Wendy was a character created by Harvey Comics as a companion to Casper the Friendly Ghost. The young witch debuted in Casper the Friendly Ghost #20 published in May 1954. She matched Casper’s innocent and earnest demeanour. Her character grew in popularity, and Harvey Comics published Wendy the Good Little Witch #1 in July 1960.

GAMEPLAY

The object of the board game was to guide all four pawns — fancy party hats — from the starting position at Wendy’s birthday party, along a spooky path, to arrive home at the haunted house.

The starting space was illustrated with Wendy, her friends (Nightmare, Spooky, and the Ghostly Trio), and a birthday cake. The highest spin started the game. Players took turns spinning and moving along the yellow path towards home.

The spinner was numbered one through six. Spinning a one through five meant a player progressed their pawns along the board the number of spaces indicated. If an opponent already occupied a space, the active player placed their hat on top of the established hat. When the player with the top hat moved that pawn, they took the entire stack with them.

When a player spun a six — illustrated with Casper — they had two options: move one of their four pawns ahead six spaces, or move a pawn of the opponent whose hat was atop a stack of hats back to the starting position.

Pawns could only enter the haunted house by an exact spin. The first player to get all four pawns home won the game.
