“Barrels of fun! Bushels of adventure! Friendly animals and so much more to see and do!”
Released by Mattel in 1976, the Sunshine Family Farm playset expanded the wholesome, back-to-basics lifestyle that defined the Sunshine Family toy line.
Similar to the Sunshine Family Home, the farm reflected growing interest in rural living and the “back-to-the-land” movement of the 1970s. The playset portrayed the Sunshine Family as stewards of the land and caring for livestock, reinforcing the line’s emphasis on simple living, self-sufficiency, and togetherness.
As with other Sunshine Family playsets, craft supplies were not included. Instead, the back of the box encouraged children to personalize the farm with homemade projects using everyday household materials. Suggestions included using a milk carton and spare yarn to create a hay bale and a paper towel tube to make a tree.
A complete playset included an unassembled barn, gate and fence, farm animals (hen, rooster, and cow), six plastic eggs, milk can and stool, water trough and pump, and garden tools (rake, hoe, shovel, ladder, axe, and bucket). Assembly instructions were also included. Sunshine Family dolls were sold separately.
COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS
Produced from 1974 to 1978, the Sunshine Family line included a variety of dolls, playsets, and accessories. Collectors seeking a complete Sunshine Family Farm should look for examples retaining the barn components, fencing, animals, and numerous small accessories. The line also included craft kits such as River Trip, Music Fun, and Gardening, providing additional pieces for those building a broader Sunshine Family collection.
