SSP Tournament of Thrills Set from Kenner (1975)

Kenner introduced its SSP (Super Sonic Power) vehicles in 1970, using a rip cord and gyro wheel to send cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles racing across the floor without batteries. The line eventually expanded to include increasingly elaborate vehicles and playsets built around crashes, stunts, and other high-speed action.

Inspired by the Tournament of Thrills stunt-driving troupe featured on ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Kenner’s SSP Tournament of Thrills Set put Daredevil Dan behind the action with a Mustang II stunt car. Kids positioned Dan on the car, set the stunt wheel, and pulled the T-Stick to send the Mustang into what Kenner called “wild power spin-outs.”

The set offered several “death-defying wild-action stunts.” Daredevil Dan could “catch” the thrill bar and swing through a complete circle, while another stunt sent the Mustang II crashing into a barrier as Dan made his “leap for life.” An adjustable rear wheel controlled the spin-out action, while a jump ramp and crash barrels added more obstacles to the course.

The SSP Tournament of Thrills Set included the Mustang II, Daredevil Dan, hook, thrill bar, jump ramp, barrels, and T-Stick.
