“Zee! Zee!”
Released in 1978 by Remco, the Spider-Man Sting-Ray Gun was a roleplay toy based on Marvel’s web-slinging superhero. Marketed for children ages 4 and up, the toy combined light and sound effects with Spider-Man branding in a handheld accessory.
The Sting-Ray Gun featured an electro-mechanical “sting” sound effect described on the packaging as an “eerie electronic noise that would scare off enemies.” A built-in Project-A-Light beam projected a large Spider-Man symbol onto walls and other surfaces.
The toy required one 9-volt battery and two AA batteries for operation. The AA batteries powered the main frame, while the front section housed a replaceable light bulb used for the projection feature.
The Sting-Ray Gun was part of a broader line of Remco Spider-Man adventure toys. Complementary releases included the Powerized 9″ Spider-Man figure, which could climb using a glow-in-the-dark web and hook system, and the Spider-Man Utility Belt, which included accessories such as a communicator, decoder glasses, handcuffs, and secret message tools.
COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS
The Spider-Man Sting-Ray Gun routinely appears on the secondary market in varying condition. Battery compartments, front caps, and original light components are common areas of wear or loss. Examples retaining the toy’s bright graphics, original packaging, and clean battery compartments are often preferred by collectors of licensed Marvel toys.
