Motorized Home Workshop from Kenner (1962)

This two-page brochure from Kenner promoted the company’s Motorized Home Workshop, a battery-powered woodworking set that allowed children to shape plastic “lumber” and balsa wood using seven miniature power tools.

The workshop included a wood-turning lathe, machine lathe, drill, circular saw, sander, jig saw and boring machine. Depending on the tool, kids could turn, drill, cut, sand and shape the supplied materials to create projects such as cars, boats, animals, furniture and outdoor bird houses. A project book provided patterns for making additional items, while paints, adhesive and a brush were also included. The motorized unit was promoted as safe for children, with a mechanism designed to stop “at the press of a finger.”

The brochure also highlighted Kenner’s $2 million nationwide television advertising campaign, which included network and local spot advertising.
