Released in 1962 by Remco, Fascination Checkers was a two-player twist on traditional checkers, played on a distinctive corner-and-cross game board.
GAMEPLAY
The object of Fascination Checkers was to capture as many opposing pieces as possible.
The game board was a 10×10 grid divided into four corner zones, each patterned as a 4×4 checkerboard. A cross-shaped neutral area connected these zones through the center. This layout created both open routes and chokepoints, influencing how players advanced and defended their positions.
Players moved alternately, advancing a piece diagonally to an adjacent square or jumping over an opponent’s piece into an empty space to capture it. Multiple jumps were permitted in one turn if available. All movement took place on the checkerboard-patterned squares within the corner zones and across the connecting center cross.
Play continued until no legal moves remained. Each player then counted their pieces, and the one with the higher total was declared the winner.
IN THE BOX
A complete game included the 10×10 board, 64 peg-style checkers (32 white short pegs and 32 black tall pegs), and a printed instruction sheet in the box.
COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS
Copies of Fascination Checkers occasionally surface through secondary auctions and vintage game dealers. Collectors should look for complete sets with all 64 peg-style checkers, the folding board, and the original instruction sheet, ideally housed in a box with minimal wear.
