Mashup a musical instrument with a fully functional mini train set, and you get Cragstan’s Xylophone Tune Train. Released in 1966, the set included 36 interchangeable sections of track and a small engine. Each section was numbered and color-coded to represent a musical key. Blank track sections (without keys) provided spacing.
Operating on a single D-cell battery, the small engine rolled along the xylophone track, vibrating to ring out a melody. The Tune Train came complete with a song book that provided instructions for six songs as well as different track layouts. With a little practice, it was possible to arrange the track into other tunes and even put more than one song on a layout.
The set also came with two mallets for manual playing.
