Twister Air from Hasbro

One of the most popular party games in history is getting a 21st-century upgrade.

Hasbro has announced Twister Air, an app-enabled game that takes the fun from the mat to the screen using augmented reality. Players clap, reach, swipe, and strike as they scramble to earn points by matching colourful wrist and ankle bands to the spots on the screen.

To get started, players simply download the free Twister Air app available on Android and iOS and place their smart device in the provided Twister Air device stand. Once the bands have been calibrated to the device’s camera, players are ready to go. When the music starts, it’s time to move.

Twister Air features three different modes of play: Solo, VS and Team Mode. The game features limb tracking, colour recognition technology, in-app high score leaderboards, and more. There is also a library of 16 songs to move and play to, including the new original tune “Twist in the Air”.

Twister is one of the most enduring and beloved party games, putting players in knots for close to 60 years. It made its debut in December 1966 as a game of physical skill that continues to be a pop culture staple thanks to a focus on retro gameplay that also embraces advances in technology. It has also enjoyed its fair share of celebrity endorsements. In fact, society’s craze for the game kicked into overdrive after Tonight Show host Johnny Carson played a game of Twister on the air in 1966 with Eva Gabor.

To celebrate the launch of Twister Air, Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez hosted a special pre-launch experience late last month in New York City. The event was attended by numerous family and lifestyle influencers who were offered a chance to demo the game prior to its release later this summer.

“For over 55 years, Twister has been a household name thanks to the iconic polka-dotted mat that puts you, family, and friends in unusual positions and hysterical situations,” says Adam Biehl, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Hasbro Gaming. “This new version of Twister will implement augmented reality technology to bring classic Twister gameplay that originated in the 1960s to modern day and will surely give players of all ages an exciting new, music-inspired experience to make memories from.”

Twister Air is currently available for pre-order through Amazon for $19.99 USD. The game is scheduled to arrive at select retailers beginning August 1st. The song “Twist in the Air” is available now on several major streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, and TikTok.
