Twirl-O-Paint from Ohio Art (1970s)

Company: Ohio Art | Release date: 1970s | Ages: 4+ | Where to purchase: eBay

“The fantastic new way to paint pictures!”

Released in the 1970s by Ohio Art, Twirl-O-Paint was a battery-powered spin-art toy that allowed kids to create colourful designs using centrifugal force. Early versions featured a heavy gauge lithographed metal base, with later models produced in plastic.

In addition to the Twirl-O-Paint machine, Ohio Art included 3 or 4 bottles of non-toxic, water-soluble paint and a set of art cards. The toy was advertised as suitable for children ages 4 and up.
To begin a painting session, a card was placed on the turntable and secured using built-in slots in the base. With the motor was switched, the card spun in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

Children created pictures by dripping paint onto the spinning card. The centrifugal motion dispersed paint into radiating lines. By varying the amount of paint, the direction of the turntable, and where drops were placed, children could produce unique patterns.

Once a creative session was complete, finished cards were set on one of two included drying racks. Kids could also proudly showcase their artwork in a provided picture frame with stand.

COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS

Used metal versions of Twirl-O-Paint were prone to staining and often show signs of wear, making pristine examples difficult to find. Later plastic models were more resistant to visible use and aging. For Ohio Art collectors, the toy remains an iconic piece within the company’s creative play lineup.
