“You Could Call It A Mechagodzilla.”
In 1974, Toho celebrated the 20th anniversary of its biggest star, Godzilla, by releasing a new film. Directed by Jun Fukuda and starring Masaaki Daimon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla introduced audiences to an exciting new antagonist for the King of the Monsters. This powerful automaton was controlled by alien invaders from the third planet of the Black Hole. The movie marked a significant milestone in the franchise, ushering in a new era of monstrous confrontations that would see Mechagodzilla become one of the most beloved behemoths in the history of cinema.
The introduction of this metallic menace also represented a turning point for the series, creatively blending science fiction and monster movie elements and captivating audiences worldwide. The character’s sleek design and formidable weaponry made it an instant favourite among fans. Over the decades, Mechagodzilla has appeared in a number of films, cementing its legacy as a quintessential adversary for Godzilla. The beast’s ability to engage in epic battles with the King of the Monsters has also made it a symbol of the enduring appeal of kaiju films.
In a fitting tribute, San Francisco-based design house Super7 is set to celebrate Mechagodzilla’s golden jubilee with the release of a new Toho Super Shogun version of the robot. This latest edition, available in futuristic “space titanium”, is crafted from plastic and features a vintage design that calls to mind the jumbo-scale Shogun Warriors toys popularized by Mattel in the late 1970s. Standing an imposing 20-inches tall, the Toho Super Shogun Mechagodzilla’s shiny metallic exterior captures the essence of its original design. The attention to detail includes everything from numerous rivets to bright red badging and ensures that it looks as though it has just stepped right off the assembly line.
Mechagodzilla comes equipped with six missile-firing fingers, a fun and interactive play feature reminiscent of classic toy designs. Its poseable arms, legs, hands, and head allow for a range of mobility, making it the perfect piece for both display and play. Additionally, wheels built into the bottom of the figure’s feet add a vintage touch, further enhancing its appeal to collectors and fans alike.
More than just a toy, the Toho Super Shogun Mechagodzilla is a celebration of the character’s timeless legacy and its impact on popular culture. As the maniacal mech turns the big 5-0, this new figure serves as testament to its place in the hearts of fans and its status as a champion of popular culture.
Now available for pre-order through the official Super7 website, the Toho Super Shogun Mechagodzilla is priced at $395 USD and has an estimated shipping date of October 2024.
