Starcades from TOMY (1987)

Company: TOMY | Release date: 1987 | Ages: 8+ | # of players: 1 | Where to purchase: eBay

Released in 1987 by TOMY, Starcades was a series of palm-sized mechanical games designed to resemble miniature arcade cabinets. Each unit fit comfortably in the hand and challenged players to hit moving targets and score points before time ran out.

Unlike many handheld games of the era, Starcades units required no batteries, relying entirely on mechanical motion powered by the internal spring timer. Instructions and scoring information were printed directly on the backing card and on the reverse of the unit. The Starcades series included several themed titles, including Rescue Copter, Goin’ Ape, Mini Mouth, Rocket Tower, Shootin’ Gallery, and Basket Ball, each built around the same wind-up target-shooting challenge.

GAMEPLAY

Gameplay began by winding a spring-driven mechanism located on the underside of the cabinet. Once activated, the internal targets began moving within the viewing window. Players attempted to line up their shot and press the firing control to register a hit before the wind-up timer expired. Each themed game featured its own target layout and scoring goals.

COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS

Starcades units appear on the secondary market in varying condition. Collectors should look for examples with intact plastic cabinets, clear viewing windows, and smooth-functioning wind-up mechanisms. The original blister packaging is frequently separated from the game units and are often missing from surviving examples.
