Sketch-o-Matic from Kohner (1962)

Company: Kohner | Release date: 1962 | Where to purchase: eBay

Released in 1962, Sketch-o-Matic was a drawing toy produced by Kohner and marketed as an “amazing remote control toy with magic eraser.”

Designed for children ages four and up, Sketch-o-Matic featured a moulded plastic body with an integrated drawing screen, stylus, spacer panel, and a sliding “Magic Eraser” mechanism. Drawing was accomplished by moving the stylus slowly across the screen. Pressing down on the spacer panel allowed users to skip lines or reposition the stylus without marking the surface. The erasing function was activated by sliding the Magic Eraser to the right and back to its stop position, clearing the screen for a new drawing. When not in use, the Magic Eraser was returned to the right and locked in place by closing the red clip.

For best results, children were advised to sketch slowly, use the toy on a table or desk, avoid pressing too hard on the base while drawing, and keep the interior free of dirt and moisture.

COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS

Sketch-o-Matic remained on the market from 1962 through 1967. Complete sets on the secondary market should include the toy unit with intact moving components, the original box, and printed instructions.
