Schylling

Founded as a family-run operation rooted in mechanical and tactile play, Schylling built its business around classic toy forms and nostalgic design, developing and stewarding enduring playthings across generations.

Origins

Founded in 1975 by Jack Schylling in Rowley, Massachusetts.

Entrepreneurial Roots

The company traces its beginnings to Jack Schylling selling mechanical flying bird toys (ornithopters) in Boston locations, including Harvard Square and Faneuil Hall, an early venture that laid the foundation for a formal toy business.

Family Operation

While Jack Schylling served as founder and creative lead, his brothers David and Tom managed marketing and financial operations, helping grow the company into a national toy brand.

Tactile Play Focus

As video games rose in popularity, Schylling maintained a focus on hands-on toys, including kaleidoscopes, Jack-in-the-Box clowns, the Space Race pinball game, classic fire trucks, and other mechanical and sensory playthings commonly sold through specialty toy retailers.

Nostalgic Brand Portfolio

Over time, Schylling expanded its lineup to include and steward established nostalgic brands and product lines such as Big Wheel, Lava Lamp, Sea-Monkeys, View-Master, classic tin toys, hand puppets, musical instruments, and the sensory toy line NeeDoh.

Continuity and Recognition

Schylling has operated out of North Andover, Massachusetts, for decades, with headquarters supporting design and distribution. In October 2024, the Wenham Museum hosted Tin Toy Story, an exhibition featuring more than 100 toys from Jack Schylling’s personal collection. In June 2025, the company marked its 50th anniversary.
