Hornby’s rail yard is expanding!
Founded in 1901 by visionary inventor Frank Hornby, this British-owned scale-model manufacturer produced its first clockwork train in 1920. A OO gauge model followed in 1938, establishing the company’s reputation for craftsmanship and innovation. Eventually listed on the London Stock Exchange, Hornby Hobbies Limited has become synonymous with model trains and has amassed a portfolio of revered brands in the last few years, ranging from Corgi to Scalextric. As of 2017, the business has been owned by Phoenix Asset Management.
Hornby is introducing the Playtrains High Speed Train Set, a brand new OO gauge offering expected to launch in October 2024. Aimed at would-be engineers ages 5 to 8, the kit not only seeks to provide endless hours of fun, but also introduces children to the exhilarating world of model railways.

And, a helpful re-railing ramp makes it a breeze for novice hobbyists to place the train on the track and get things rolling.
What stands out most about this set, however, is its interactive elements. Featuring multiple sounds and working lights, the Playtrains High Speed Train Set brings a layer of authenticity that immerses children in the hobby. There is even a battery-operated infrared controller that allows youngsters to take full control of the train, running it forward and backward at various speeds. Required, but not included, are two AAA batteries for the remote and four AA batteries for the train.
