One of the more charming films to come out of 2022 was Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. A unique re-telling of the classic Italian fairy tale, it featured the voice talents of Gregory Mann, Ron Perlman, Ewan McGregor, Finn Wolfhard, and Cate Blanchett. The beautifully crafted feature from the director of Pan’s Labyrinth was not only heralded as a masterpiece, it also earned an Oscar nomination in the Animated Feature Film category of the 95th Academy Awards, which will be handed out on March 12, 2023.
A literary icon with a rich history stretching all the way back to Carlo Collodi’s original 1883 children’s novel, Pinocchio is one of the most recognized and re-imagined characters in the world. Carved by a lonely carpenter named Geppetto, Pinocchio is a marionette who dreams of becoming a real boy. Del Toro’s version is only the latest to adapt the character’s classic tale — Walt Disney released its own animated film in 1940. In more recent years, the character has made appearances in the popular Shrek movies from DreamWorks and has been portrayed by an interesting selection of actors, including Sandy Duncan, Paul Reubens, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
In an effort to help audiences bring home the magic of this latest tale, Insight Editions has announced a brand new Pinocchio maquette. Part of an exclusive collector’s set, this limited edition replica has been personally approved by Guillermo del Toro and was created under the careful supervision of the filmmakers. Manufactured from an original filming maquette, this 1:1 scale collectible is made of polyresin over a metal armature, with all construction and paintwork overseen by the sculptors at ShadowMachine.
Also included is a special signature card signed by del Toro, co-director Mark Gustafson, and co-screenwriter Patrick McHale. Additionally, the set features a limited-edition copy of the book Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio: A Timeless Tale Told Anew. The 232-page publication sports a unique cover illustration created by Guy Davis alongside two exclusive gatefolds and a host of previously unseen insert items that are certain to make a great addition to any reference library.
Both the maquette and book are presented in a special wooden case featuring engraved details.
Limited to just 550 pieces worldwide and available exclusively through Insight Editions, the Pinocchio replica maquette is priced at $495 USD and is available for pre-order now. Fans can expect the item to begin shipping after March 13th, 2023.
