Released in 1976 under Hasbro’s Romper Room brand, the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse playset invited children into the world of the Mickey Mouse Club television series by mirroring the variety show’s characters and environment.
Promoted as “a place for all the Mouseketeers to gather and join the jamboree”, the toy combined the charm of egg-shaped Weebles with the excitement of pretending to produce the Mickey Mouse Club. Children could use the television camera and spotlight to set up their shots as an audience of Weeble Mouseketeers interacted with Mickey Mouse and Pluto Weebles.
Interactive elements such as a swing, hinged clubhouse doors, rocking chair, and others accommodated many play patterns and extended play as children imagined different scenarios for themselves and the characters to enact.
IN THE BOX
A complete playset included the clubhouse cabin, grandstand, swing, see-saw, rocking chair, mailbox and letters, television camera, spotlight, play mat with illustrated path and clubhouse area, flag pole and flag with the club’s logo, a bumpy bucket ride flagpole attachment, Mickey Mouse Weeble, Pluto Weeble, two Mouseketeer Weebles, and assembly instructions.
COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS
Weebles were a popular toy with children of the 1970s. The wobbly figures were sold individually and in playsets such as the Weebles Tarzan Jungle Hut (1974), Weebles Tree House (1975), Weebles Haunted House (1976), and other toys that encouraged kids to use their imaginations.
In 2023, PlayMonster announced a partnership with Hasbro that will see a relaunch of the Playskool brand, including Weebles.
