“Mattel’s Man in Space”
Released in 1966 from Mattel, the Major Matt Mason playset jettisoned children’s imaginations into outer space where they could dream of exploring uncharted realms.
The Major Matt Mason line was introduced by Mattel in 1966. The toys capitalized on a growing fascination with space bouyed by the “space race” of the 1960s. The toys were centred around Major Matt Mason, an astronaut stationed on the moon. The line included figures, a game, and playsets highlighting unique elements of an imagined life in space.
The Major Matt Mason Space Station was a central component in line. The multi-platform control centre included a battery-operated flashing radar beacon, blue dome, and hinged solar panels. The operations hub offered multiple configurations, such as a headquarters for the space team, an observation and launch platform, and defence centre.
Figures were sold separately. Major Matt Mason’s cohorts included astronauts Doug Davis, Sgt. Storm, and Jeff Long. No space mission would be complete without the presence of an extra-terrestrial being. For Major Matt Mason, Captain Lazer filled that role. The character was a giant human-like figure from Mars who had a radiation shield, cosmic beacon, laser pistol, and flashing eye beams.
COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS
The future of Major Matt Mason collectibles might be on the upswing. In 2019, details were released about a feature film in early development that is based on the characters, with Tom Hanks attached to the project. This is good news for collectors, as it could spark renewed interest in the classic toys, increase the value and desirability of vintage pieces, and see the release of new collectible objects related to the brand.
