It’s time to get back in the water with the new LEGO Ideas JAWS set!
Regarded by many as the first official blockbuster film, Steven Spielberg’s JAWS swam into theatres on June 20th, 1975. It starred Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw as a trio on the hunt for a deadly shark terrorizing beachgoers on the Fourth of July. Based on Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel and spawning three sequels, a popular amusement park ride, and serving as the inspiration for a tidal wave’s worth of imitators, the movie was inducted into the National Film Registry in 2001 and continues to be lauded as one of the most influential motion pictures in history.
Arriving just in time for summer, LEGO’s all-new brick-built diorama is a meticulously designed recreation of one of the most famous scenes from the movie. For the first time, fans can relive all the suspense and excitement of Spielberg’s timeless masterpiece in brick. Originally conceived by fan Johnny Campbell through the LEGO Ideas community platform, the 1,497-piece model was produced in collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences and captures a number of details taken straight from the film.
The set features the iconic Orca boat complete with a detailed cabin, removable roof, adjustable boom and rigging, plus loads of recognizable accessories–a revolver, compass, fishing rod, harpoon, spear, and the yellow barrels that were so pivotal to the movie’s plot. Minifigures of Police Chief Martin Brody, marine biologist Matt Hooper, and fisherman Sam Quint are also included.
Once completed, the set can be placed on a brick-built seawater base with the shark model attacking the Orca boat. A printed tile with Chief Brody’s famous line — “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” — is also attached to the base. It’s the perfect final touch on this nostalgic and playful centrepiece. The Shark can also be displayed separately on its own stand.
“JAWS is my favourite movie of all-time, so I really wanted to recreate it in LEGO bricks,” says designer Johnny Campbell. “LEGO building has always been a part of my life in some shape or form but in order to get all of the finer details, I actually freeze-framed JAWS as I watched it so that I could catch a glimpse of the finer details taking notes as I went along. It is just mind-blowing that my design is now an official LEGO set. I can’t wait to stand in a LEGO shop looking at the shelves and seeing a set that I have been involved with and watching someone buying it. It’s every LEGO fan’s dream!”
Designed for fans 18 years of age and up, the LEGO Ideas JAWS set is a must-have for any film buff or LEGO maniac. Priced at $149.99 USD, the set will be available to LEGO Insiders beginning on August 3rd before its wider release just a few days later on August 6th.
