Johnny Express from Topper Toys (1965)

Company: Topper Toys | Release date: 1965 | Where to purchase: eBay

In 1965, Topper Toys released Johnny Express, a modular line of battery-operated, remote-controlled trucks and accessories designed to simulate their full-sized counterparts.

The centrepiece and primary building block of the line was the Johnny Express Tractor Trailer combination that stood 33-inches long, 11-inches tall, and 8-inches wide. The truck was tethered to a remote control that allowed kids to control the speed of the big rig, turn it left and right, and move it forwards and backwards.

The tractor-trailer was also ruggedized with an integrated steel bar that, according to ads at the time, was capable of supporting the weight of a “200 lb. man.”

INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS

Topper integrated a “sure-lock” feature into the Johnny Express truck, which allowed other Johnny Express accessories to be easily swapped in and out. Accessory options included a Reefer Van, Dump Body, Liquid Tanker, Crane, and Troop Carrier.

Children could also expand their trucking fleets by adding a forklift, conveyor belt, storage tank, and bridge.

COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS

With its innovative design and engaging play experience, the Johnny Express line has remained popular with collectors. Enterprising collectors can find Johnny Express trucks and accessories in well-maintained or even unused condition on the secondary market.
