Released by Hasbro in 1966, Down on the Farm was a spin-and-move board game in which players raced to be the first to complete a series of pre-defined chores.
GAMEPLAY
The first player spun the spinner and moved their piece to the next space, matching the colour the spinner landed on. The second player then did the same, and so on.
If a player spun the same colour as the space they were already on, it counted as a bonus, and one chore was considered complete.
Players kept going around the path until they had completed all six chores: 1) Plow the fields, 2) Milk the cows, 3) Feed the pigs, 4) Feed the chicks, 5) Feed the horses, and 6) Pitch the hay. The first player to finish all six was declared the winner.
IN THE BOX
A complete game included the gameboard, spinner, four playing pieces, four farm animals, a calf, a horse, a pig, and a set of chicks. Printed instructions were included in the box.
COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS
Complete copies of Down on the Farm can be challenging to find, as the small plastic farm animals, especially the chicks, were easily lost, and the spinner was prone to wear and tear. Collectors should look for sets that include all original components, including the gameboard, spinner, four animals, playing pieces, and printed instructions.
