Dinah-Mite Ski Chalet from Mego (1974)

Company: Mego | Release date: 1974 | Where to purchase: eBay

Released in 1974 by Mego, the Dinah-Mite Ski Chalet playset allowed fashion doll Dinah-Mite to escape the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy some downtime with her friends in the serenity of her own woodland retreat.

The A-frame chalet was made of plastic-coated cardboard and was illustrated to resemble a rustic chalet with a wood-shingled roof and wood-slat siding. A snow-covered evergreen tree and firelogs flanked the hinged entrance. Above the doorway hung a faux-wood sign welcoming visitors to Dinah-Mite’s Place.

Kids could easily access the interior of the chalet thanks to the roof that folded open. Inside was decorated in a hip 1970s style featuring wood panelling, a bearskin rug on a tile floor, woodstove, kitchen sink, cabinetry, and a few homey accessories. Other features of the playset included a sleeping loft, snowmobile, sofa, and two chairs.

COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS

Dinah-Mite was Mego’s answer to Mattel’s Barbie line. Dinah-Mite enjoyed a similarly fabulous wardrobe that included everything from loungewear to trendy streetwear and fancy gowns. Her male friend, Don, was often nearby, ready to accompany her on adventures supported by playsets that included the Campmobile and Beach House, and battery-operated accessories such as a bicycle, snowmobile, sportcycle, and horse. Toys from the Dinah-Mite line can be readily found on the secondary market.
