Bring-Along-A-Song Cassette Player from TOMY (1983)

Company: TOMY | Release date: 1983 | Where to purchase: eBay

Released in 1983 by TOMY, the Bring-Along-A-Song Cassette Player (#1058) was a wind-up music-box toy styled to resemble a portable tape player. Marketed for children ages 3 to 7, it operated without batteries and was designed for use exclusively with Bring-Along-A-Song cassettes.

The player functioned by winding a side-mounted turn button in the direction of an arrow, inserting one of the included toy cassettes, closing the front window, and pressing the play button. Two cassettes were included, together featuring four nursery songs: “Hickory Dickory Dock,” “London Bridge,” “This Old Man,” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” One cassette could be stored in a dedicated slot on the back of the unit.

Internally, the toy used a mechanical music box mechanism. Each plastic cassette housed a small double-sided disc fitted with pins. When wound, a gearwheel engaged a ring near the centre of the disc, causing it to rotate. The pins activated a cylinder that plucked a metal comb, producing the melody. The design visually echoed contemporary cassette players while relying entirely on spring-driven mechanical sound production.

The Bring-Along-A-Song concept was later expanded. A Bring-Along-A-Song Record Player was introduced in 1985, and in 1993 TOMY released a Bring-Along-A-Song CD Player. The CD Player retained the wind-up music-box mechanism but was styled after a top-loading compact disc player and used small disc-shaped music inserts.

COLLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS

The Bring-Along-A-Song Cassette Player appears regularly on the secondary market in varying condition. Complete sets are preferred, as the toy was originally sold with two proprietary music cassettes that were often separated from the player over time. Collectors should look for units with both original cassettes, an intact winding mechanism, a functioning playback system, and an undamaged cassette door and hinge.
