Playmates Toys pays homage to the 1984 sci-fi cartoon series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, with the new Voltron Classic ’84 Lion Collection. The original series revolved around five astronauts and their ongoing fight against the evil forces of King Zarkon and Prince Lotor. Each astronaut piloted a robotic lion that could be combined into a super-robot known as Voltron.
The Playmates collection includes five fully articulated lions, each with an array of weapons from the show. The Classic Yellow Lion contains a dual missile launcher, razor wheel, and jaw blade. The Classic Blue Lion is equipped with a missile launcher, beam emitter, and jaw blade. The Classic Red Lion uses a missile launcher, laser cannon, jaw blade, and Voltron’s signature Blazing Sword. Finally, the Classic Green Lion is armed with a missile launcher, battering spike, jaw blade, and Voltron’s shield.
Each of these lion figures checks in at $17.99 USD.
The pièce de résistance in the new set is the Black Classic Lion. Priced at $29.99 USD, it emits more than a dozen sound effects and phrases from the show, and is the connection point for the other four figures.
When all five lions are combined, the resulting Voltron is over 16 inches tall. The combination also increases the available phrase and sound effects to more than 60.
The Voltron Classic ’84 Lion Collection is available now, allowing fans ages 4 and up to protect the universe, one interlock, dynotherm, infracell, and megathruster at a time.
