The Strong Announces 2024 National Toy Hall of Fame Inductees

The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York announced the 2024 inductees to its National Toy Hall of Fame on Tuesday, November 12. Three objects of play received the honour: My Little Pony, Phase 10, and Transformers.

Established by The Strong in 1998, the National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes childhood objects that have influenced play over generations. Held annually, the hall selects finalists based on the guidance of a committee of historians, educators, and other individuals with subject-matter expertise. This year, 12 finalists were considered for induction. Those nominated that didn’t gain entry this year include Hess Toy Trucks, Pokémon Trading Card Game, Sequence, Apples to Apples, balloons, Choose Your Own Adventure books, stick horse, trampoline, and remote-controlled vehicles.

The newest additions to the National Toy Hall of Fame join past inductees such as Tinkertoy (1998), Slinky (2000), Easy-Bake Oven (2006), Magic 8 Ball (2018), and Cabbage Patch Kids (2023).

“These are three very deserving toys that showcase the wide range of how people play,” says Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections and chief curator. “But for My Little Pony, in particular, this year is extra validating. The beloved toy was a finalist seven times before finally crossing the finish line!”

Is a deserving classic toy or game missing from the National Toy Hall of Fame? You can advocate for an object of play to be considered for 2024 induction by using the nomination form on The Strong’s website. The four major criteria for nomination outlined by The Strong include: Icon-status (the toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered); Longevity (the toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations); Discovery (the toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play); and Innovation (the toy profoundly changed play or toy design).
