When it comes to fads of the 1990s, few were as endearing as the Tamagotchi. Launched by Bandai in 1996, these pocket-sized digital pets became a global phenomenon and one of the best-selling toys of the decade. By 1997, they were practically everywhere. And by the Spring 1998, an estimated 40 million units had been sold worldwide.
Nearly 30 years later, everyone’s favourite “egg watch” is still here, defying the odds and constantly revamping itself to feel as fresh and new as it did all those years ago.
This summer, Bandai is set to evolve the brand once again with Tamagotchi Paradise, a new device that transforms one-on-one virtual pet care into a full-scale world-building adventure. Launching next month, it features a vibrant full-colour screen and, for the first time, a side-mounted zoom dial that lets players explore their Tamagotchi’s environment across four different layers, from a wide aerial view down to the cellular level.
The experience begins with the aptly named “Egg Bang,” a cosmic event that hatches a digital planet. From there, players zoom into one of three “Tama Fields” representing land, sea, or sky. The initial ecosystem is determined by the shell purchased (Pink Land, Blue Water, or Purple Sky), while the remaining environments become accessible through continued play.
Players take over the role of a researcher, meeting and raising over 50 different Tamagotchi characters across 12 species. Thanks to the return of gene-mixing, compatible pets can also create new hybrid characters, resulting in more than 50,000 possible combinations. How each character is fed and cared for determines which species will evolve and thrive over time.
Tamagotchi Paradise also introduces a new layer of social interaction. Two devices can now be connected via a top-mounted docking port at the top, letting characters form families, spark rivalries, pull pranks, and more. It’s a lively addition that brings fresh unpredictability to each encounter.
As Tamagotchi enters its fourth decade, Bandai isn’t relying solely on nostalgia; they’re actively expanding the digital playground. Tamagotchi Paradise isn’t just another virtual pet. It’s a celebration of what the brand has represented since 1996: creativity, connection, and a whole lot of charm!
