Rube Goldberg Activity Sets from Target

A partnership between Toronto-based Spin Master and Rube Goldberg, Inc. has borne fruit: a new line of STEM-based (science, technology, engineering, and math) activity sets inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist. In a typical Rube Goldberg drawing, a complex contraption performs rudimentary tasks through a chain reaction of events. The new Rube Goldberg activity sets stay true to this theme.

Each toy provides children ages 8 and up with instructions on how to first build the invention. Various STEM-based principles are introduced and reinforced during building. For example, The Acrobat Challenge combines a basketball, a monkey, and a tightrope to launch an acrobat from a cannon – an example of gravitational and spring forces at work. The Speeding Car Challenge incorporates a chicken, a tennis racket, and some tires to launch a speeding car, illustrating the basic principles of gravity and air pressure.

In true Goldberg fashion, each activity set is modular and sets can be interconnected with each other, allowing kids to build larger, more complex inventions.

The initial launch of the Rube Goldberg line is available exclusively at Target stores and priced from $9.99 to $29.99 USD.
