The Pokémon Fossil Museum is a travelling exhibit that encourages people to learn about paleontology through fictional characters of the Pokémon franchise.
The exhibit includes the fossils and skeletons of real-life prehistoric creatures that once inhabited Earth. Those specimens sit alongside Fossil Pokémon, a cast of regenerable characters from the Pokémon universe whose design takes inspiration from prehistoric life. Illustrations offer comparative studies of the creatures. The exhibit aims to make learning about paleontology more fun by using the media franchise — established in 1995 — to gain the interest of younger audiences.
The Pokémon Fossil Museum is scheduled to tour Japan through 2022 with stops in Tokyo, Aichi, Hokkaido, and Shimane. Stops are also in the works for 2023 with the dates and locations still to be announced.
