LEGO returns to the race track! In a new collaborative project, the building-block giant is again partnering with McLaren Automotive to bring a brand-new two-pack of LEGO race cars to market.
Created in celebration of the automaker’s 60th anniversary, this newest addition to the popular Speed Champions series introduces both the classic McLaren F1 LM supercar and the latest McLaren Solus GT hypercar into the world of brick-based construction sets.
Founded in 1963, McLaren got its start as a motor racing team in England. Now the second most successful Formula One competitor behind Ferrari, the company has enjoyed a total of 183 F1 victories in addition to 12 Drivers’ Championships and eight Constructors’ Championships. McLaren also has a history of competing in American open-wheel racing and even took the checkered flag at the Can-Am Challenge Cup — winning all 11 races in 1969. In 1981, McLaren merged with Ron Dennis’ Project Four Racing. Just a few years later, in 1985, the company expanded to include McLaren Automotive, now a wholly owned subsidiary of the McLaren Group. These days, they continue to find involvement both within motorsport and the production of luxury cars.
LEGO has designed the two new McLaren-inspired models to accurately reflect their real-world counterparts. The iconic F1 LM features its trademark “papaya orange” colour, centre-mounted driving seat, and dramatic cooling ducts. The breathtaking Solus GT — based on a 2017 concept that first appeared in Gran Turismo Sport on the PlayStation 4 — features everything from a single-seat cockpit to an impressive high-downforce rear wing. The set even includes a pair of minifigure drivers sporting McLaren racing gear.
LEGO and McLaren have teamed up several times since 2015, working together to design a total of eight different models. While cars like the Elva and Senna have found a home within the Speed Champions series, more advanced offerings such as the Senna GTR and the automaker’s sleek orange and blue F1 car can be found in the LEGO Technic line.
The new LEGO Speed Champions McLaren Solus GT and McLaren F1 LM set is designed for builders nine years of age and up. Consisting of 581 individual pieces, this special anniversary two-pack is available now in-store and online for $34.99 USD.
Happy 60th, McLaren. Thanks for the gift!
